CinemaSerf on Anita and Me

6/10 · Sep 3, 2023

It falls into the category of quiet, heartfelt stories about growing up that elicits occasional amusement, though ultimately it’s fairly forgettable. I don't know how much of it reflects writer Meera Syal’s personal experiences, however, the narrative focuses on a young British Asian girl named "Meena" (Chandeep Uppal) and her family living in a Midlands town where she must navigate adolescence amidst feelings of tedium and underlying prejudice. When the "Rutter" family arrives next door, she finds herself drawn to "Anita" (Anna Brewster), despite Anita’s somewhat unconventional nature, and the story unfolds through encounters with sweet shops, first experiences, and a search for identity. While it benefits from a strong supporting cast including Kathy Bates and Sanjeev Bhaskar, the film feels overly cautious—not necessarily needing explicit content like violence or profanity; but simply too earnest to leave a lasting impression. It’s not quite dull, but it comes close.
