Tab Hunter portrays “Hayes,” a muscular marine tasked with heading up an operation to demolish an American submarine seized by the Japanese and holding a confidential radar model. The story involves a prolonged underwater journey to reach the island in question, and as expected, there are some lighter moments along the way. These include surreal dream sequences featuring "Malzone" (Frankie Avalon), who performs a rather repetitive song called “The Girl Back Home,” accompanied by a visually striking presentation of dancing girls in vibrant clothing. Apart from these unsettling portions, the film is essentially a low-budget and upbeat wartime story that incorporates actual newsreel footage, some overly large artificial plants, and occasional submarine interior sets to keep things moving toward an energetic and patriotic ending. It’s certainly not a high point for anyone involved either on screen or in production, but I didn't dislike it; I thought it was predictably silly. If this had been created during the war years, it might have succeeded as propaganda. However, since that wasn't the case, it couldn't.
