The film brought to mind “Goodbye, Mr. Chips” (1939) because it movingly portrays the devotion of a teacher whose life is often given over to their profession. There’s also a character who doesn't always receive recognition from her students or even some coworkers as years pass. Ella Bishop, played by Martha Scott, has consistently valued learning and takes great satisfaction in being an educated woman. She excels academically and is chosen by the school principal (Edmund Gwenn) to teach English to younger children—a responsibility that proves more challenging than it initially appears. While romance remains a possibility at this point in her life, complications arise when her cousin “Amy” and another man’s wife interfere, so the rest of the story centers on her firm but caring dedication to her students as her own personal journey takes a winding course. Following the death of her sister shortly after the birth of her daughter, Ella adopts the baby (Marsha Hunt), hoping she will develop into a woman with strong values and purpose while also finding renewed meaning in her own life. Her steadfast companion throughout everything is her dependable friend Sam (William Gargan), but will anything ever happen between them? You’ll likely feel sympathy for the elderly gardener, too. While it has touching moments, the film eventually drifts toward sentimentality and becomes a rather foreseeable story that's both melancholy and reflective, though perhaps rushed and overly sweet. Nevertheless, Scott gives an emotionally powerful performance, and it does serve as a reminder of a time when education was somewhat of a privilege.
