A doctor dedicated to helping others (Robert Francis) finds himself in a fort in southwest Oklahoma, where he must navigate the prejudice of an anti-Indian captain (Philip Carey) while tending to Kiowas suffering from malaria. The commander’s flirtatious niece is attracted to him, but his attention seems drawn to Manyi-ten of the Kiowa people (May Wynn). Threateningly, the Comanche are also present. "They Rode West," released in 1954, draws inspiration from “Broken Arrow,” a film from 1950, and shares some similarities with "War Arrow" that came out the year before. It's nearly as good as the former and better than the latter. Robert Francis was well-suited to playing the doctor; he possessed the kind of appearance that suggested someone driven by ethics rather than social expectations. He and May Wynn had previously acted together in “The Caine Mutiny.” Sadly, less than a year after this film’s release, he died in a plane crash along with two other people—he was only 25 years old at the time. The movie has a running time of one hour and twenty-four minutes and was filmed at Corriganville movie ranch, situated just east of Semi Valley, which is northwest of Los Angeles. GRADE: B
