There isn’t a whole lot new under the sun here, yet I did find myself enjoying Geena Davis channeling Maureen O’Hara as the pirate "Adams." She essentially takes over command of the ship following her father’s passing, although the crew has doubts about her leadership and she needs to demonstrate that she's capable. The story then involves her being chased by the villain "Dawg" (Frank Langella), alongside the clumsy but attractive slave "Shaw" (Matthew Modine), as they try to locate three fragments of a distinctive map leading to treasure. From here, the narrative unfolds with various pirate schemes colliding with interference from British authorities in the form of Governor "Ainslee" (Patrick Malahide) and more villainous plotting – all set to a backdrop of fast-moving sword fights, gunplay, and general nautical mayhem. The film does feel drawn out; it takes quite some time to establish everyone’s roles. However, once they're at sea, the movie turns into a cheerful and energetic adventure on the water. I would have liked to see more from Langella, and fewer of the romantic scenes that begin to weigh down the story, but overall, it proved to be an entertaining experience.
