Despite its reputation, it isn’t quite as terrible as people say, though it's obvious that both the main actors and the director made some questionable choices (it's a well-known fact that if you hired Harlin at that stage, you were getting Davis—and that’s probably why she ended up marrying him). She performs admirably and gives it her all, but this type of movie simply isn’t suited to her talents, and Modine clearly doesn’t have what it takes to be a leading man in big-budget action movies. Some of Harlin's action sequences were actually quite effective, but he seemed to cater too much to his wife's preferences. That approach can sometimes work if you're filmmakers like the Rossellinis shooting a drama in Italy, but here it falls flat—though I’ll always be a fan of Davis. It’s worth noting that this is my 13-year-old son’s favorite film. I often wonder what might have happened if they had decided to make more installments—the conclusion certainly left things open enough to suggest that possibility. If you relax and go with the flow, it can be a fun, easy watch. It's worth seeing if you like lighthearted action movies or are watching with kids. It’s not as entertaining as the first two 'Pirates of the Caribbean' films, but it is better than those that followed.
