The production felt noticeably constrained, and it’s easy to see why; the initial scenes set in the gentleman’s club seemed to consume a significant portion of the funds, with one character beginning to recite from a collection of Edgar Allan Poe’s tales. The narrative then shifts to the unsettling mansion inhabited by the "Usher" siblings – “Lord Roderick,” portrayed by Kaye Tendeter, and “Lady Madeleine,” played by Gwen Watford. When "Jonathan," acted by Irving Steen, goes to visit his friend, he finds that both are suffering from unusual illnesses. Their doctor advises "Jonathan" to depart without delay... What follows isn't among Poe’s strongest works, and the presentation is remarkably still. The acting style feels like a low-budget touring company production; dialogue is delivered in a very deliberate manner, the cinematography is similarly rigid, and the film’s overall tempo – although it does have moments of suspense enhanced by unsettling imagery and an impressive storm sequence toward the finish – moves at a snail's pace. Consistent with many of Poe’s narratives, there isn’t really a resolution offered, only an ending; in this instance, though, it felt like it couldn't arrive soon enough.
