It feels like everyone around me has turned against me. Dawn at Socorro comes from director George Sherman and writer George Zuckerman. The film includes Rory Calhoun, Piper Laurie, David Brian, Kathleen Hughes, Alex Nicol and Edgar Buchanan. Joseph Gershenson handled the music and Carl Guthrie was in charge of cinematography. One Night In Socorro. This is a really well-made Western. The story centers on Calhoun as Brett Wade, a tough gunslinger dealing with serious health problems. Following his doctor’s advice he decides to move somewhere healthier, but people from his past and new enemies won't let him escape. It draws elements from several familiar Westerns, but writing it off as an imitation would be a mistake. The script is surprisingly intelligent and the story never feels stale or unbelievable. From an action perspective, it does very well; right away we see a shootout in Lordsburgh that keeps things moving quickly. I won't hold you accountable for being unclothed. There’s some good dark humor to be found here, alongside memorable moments like Brett playing Beethoven’s Moonlight Sonata at his own funeral (you'll get it when you see it) and a poker game where Piper Laurie is the prize! There’s an ongoing conflict between Wade and Jimmy Rapp (Nicol), which is well-crafted because it explores codes of conduct in opposition to another character. The technical aspects are spot on. The location photography, filmed around Apple Valley and Victorville, looks beautiful, as does Guthrie's color work for the interior scenes. The props and set design are very appealing, including a fantastic locomotive that train fans will appreciate. While supporting cast members like Lee Van Cleef & Skip Homeier have smaller parts, they all deliver strong performances, with Calhoun once again demonstrating his strengths in this genre. My past - every single awful day of it! The film really shines when it comes to the characters. Laurie’s Rannah Hayes was banished from her family for supposedly being a flirt and she carries that burden with her. She finds a connection with Wade, a man weighed down by his life, and that weight could be what destroys him—and he knows it. Buchanan is great as the lawman trying to get Wade out of town quickly, Nicol seems fueled by alcohol and a desire for revenge, while David Brian portrays Dick Braden, an unscrupulous businessman without any morals. I definitely suggest this to people who enjoy Westerns. 8/10
