Regis Toomey, billed as "McGann," manages to elevate what would otherwise be a fairly unremarkable gangster movie – primarily because his character spends much of the runtime inebriated. The story follows “Chick Williams,” whose real name is Chester Morris, after he’s freed from prison and resumes his activities with a group involved in bootlegging. A police officer's death during a heist leads to Chick being considered a suspect; however, he claims to have been elsewhere, supported by "Joan" (Eleanor Griffith) and some tickets to a play. The film suffers because the plot’s twists are predictable – we discover who committed what actions, learn the identity of the undercover officer planted within his organization, and consequently, much of the suspense is lost from an early point. The acting and overall production feel stiff and theatrical, as if designed for the stage. It's possible that it would have functioned better had it been created a few years prior as a silent film, since the spoken lines don’t significantly enhance this average crime story.
