This low-budget film set in the Florida swamps centers on two married couples who travel to a hunting lodge inherited from someone, a place that’s been empty for eight years. They encounter strange behavior from the local residents when inquiring about the property, and find themselves in for a disturbing night of violence. "Blood Stalkers" (1976), also known as “The Night Daniel Died,” draws clear inspiration from "Deliverance," with some possible appearances by a swamp creature thrown into the mix. The movie gets off to an unexpectedly good start considering its limited resources, allowing viewers to get acquainted with the four main characters, although it does lose momentum at times. Cisse Cameron is memorable in her role as Jeri, and blonde Toni Crabtree also stands out as Kim; the latter has a brief scene where she’s swimming naked at night—just so you know. Unfortunately, after the middle point, there's an extended nighttime sequence that feels overly dark and slow-moving, which seems to be due to amateurish filmmaking techniques. However, these weaker moments are often balanced by well-executed scenes like the artistic depiction of a Black church. The final violent act is handled effectively, all things considered, and I appreciated the explanation provided. Ken Miller, who portrays Daniel, was 43 years old during filming in June 1975, while Cisse Cameron, playing his wife, was 21. This age difference is mentioned because someone had questioned it. However, Cisse could easily be mistaken for being in her mid-thirties, so it’s not a significant problem. And, frankly, it's not unusual for husbands to be older than their wives. Some of the film's music was composed by Stan Webb, who later contributed a song to "Thelma & Louise." The remainder of the soundtrack was created by Blood Sweat and Tears, but they weren’t credited in order to save money. This represents the only directorial effort from the writer/director, who also has a small role as a bald local resident. He claims he encountered Bigfoot when he was 21 and appeared in four documentaries about sasquatch between 1972 and 1976, not to mention that he lectured at colleges and universities before retiring to western Montana. "Blackwater" (2007) is a superior film of this type of low-budget production, featuring four female protagonists instead of two couples. The movie has a running time of 1 hour and 34 minutes, and was filmed in southeastern Florida, specifically at Fort Lauderdale and the Everglades just to the west. GRADE: C/C- (4.5/10)
