CinemaSerf on The Rise and Fall of the Great Lakes

Spanning more than 94,000 square miles between the United States and Canada, the Great Lakes are examined in this production, which features Bill Mason’s visuals alongside Bruce Mackay’s lyrics for some rather silly songs. Their work together delivers a diverting look at how these lakes took shape due to glacial action long ago. Throughout, we observe Blake James, an energetic and nimble canoeist, as he journeys through diverse scenery shaped by the vast amounts of freshwater; his travels include amusing incidents involving his kayak while dodging alligators. Eventually, humans appear, introducing their destructive abilities in building and construction. Consistent with Mason’s style, thoughtful and deliberate photography is evident here, and the cheerful narration interwoven with occasionally wry songs makes a quiet but firm statement regarding humanity's impact on this natural environment. James also brings energy to his role as the comedic canoeist.
