A late-night radio DJ finds herself fielding strange calls from an unknown person during an electrical storm; the caller recounts incidents involving household electronics impacted by the weather. The framing device is quite strong and effectively ties all of the individual stories together, giving them focus. The various segments are directed by different filmmakers, but they all explore a common unsettling idea about technology possibly being dangerous. There are narratives featuring gamers battling one another in virtual reality, unusual instances involving Alexa devices, supernatural encounters with former partners, folk horror-style disturbing visions, men fixated on a particular food item, an extremely dark game show competition, and a living plaything that causes destruction for a couple. Virus Detected successfully combines some inventive and bizarre concepts with a darker look at how reliant we are on technology. Moments of humor appear throughout as well, which makes it something you really shouldn’t miss. It's presently making its way through film festivals, and one can only wish for wider release because this anthology is genuinely excellent.
