The story unfolds in a bleak future where condemned prisoners are exploited by a corporation seeking to transform incarceration through memory implants. The plot centers on two inmates participating in this procedure, who must find a way out before their sanity deteriorates completely. *The Protos Experiment*, a recent entry at film festivals like Another Hole In The Head and Horror-On-Sea, is an independent production that shows the directors, Brian Avenet-Bradley and Laurence Avenet-Bradley, were inspired by well-known movie series while developing their own concepts, resulting in a compelling starting point. Most of the characters appear to be inmates facing execution who are unwillingly part of a medical trial, supposedly in exchange for reduced sentences. From the beginning, it’s evident that they have no memories of their past or how they arrived at this place, and I believe providing some background information could have made these people more compelling and allowed viewers to form an attachment. The storyline suffered from a convoluted structure. Frequent shifts in location and editing choices occasionally made it difficult to follow what was occurring. Despite its flaws, there are worthwhile ideas present that would be more impactful with careful refinement. The production team did a commendable job creating striking visuals despite budgetary limitations. The fast-paced action sequences combined with some noteworthy performances demonstrate the potential of independent filmmaking. Ultimately, this is an imaginative idea with a strong dystopian atmosphere. It possesses all the elements needed for a truly excellent film if it receives further polishing and tighter editing.
