James Berry on Obsession

8/10 · May 20, 2026

The feeling of waking up suddenly, knowing someone’s watching you, and then seeing your child standing silently beside the bed—that's precisely the kind of intense fear this film creates. *Obsession* is a horror movie that goes beyond simple scares; it aims to deeply disturb and overwhelm you. There's a brief period of calm in the beginning, but once One Wish Willow’s character breaks, the atmosphere shifts dramatically. You could practically feel the anxiety spreading through the audience. Inde Navarrette delivers an outstanding performance. Her ability to quickly change from a crazed, fixated girlfriend to a normal, frightened Nikki who realizes she's a prisoner, and then instantly revert to that disturbing state, is truly unsettling. The scene in the bedroom where she observes Bear sleeping will stay with me for quite some time. Director Curry Barker deserves significant praise for successfully transitioning from YouTube horror content to a theatrical release. He prioritizes atmosphere over cheap sound effects, skillfully using camera angles, shadows, and prolonged silence to build tension. There’s one shot of her simply standing there and smiling that lasts so long it visibly made everyone in the theater uncomfortable. Honestly, this is something I'll only experience once because I don't want to endure that kind of emotional distress again. However, seeing it with a group of people in a movie theater is definitely worth doing. Verdict: Front Row (An Absolute Must-See)
