Michael Johnston portrays "Bear," who harbors a secret affection for his friend "Nikki" (Inde Navarrette), but lacks the nerve to even ask her on a date. When she expresses a desire to leave their small town, he impulsively purchases a novelty toy promising wish fulfillment, drawing a comparison to Aladdin's lamp. After giving her a ride home and experiencing an awkward farewell, he breaks the toy and makes his wish in frustration after she departs. He’s unprepared for the reality of his wish coming true, setting off a chain reaction that disrupts the lives of nearly everyone around them—and not always in a positive or secure way. His situation doesn't get easier when he realizes undoing what he wished for will be incredibly difficult. While both leads are strong, I felt Navarrette’s performance was slightly more impactful, as they both deliver intense portrayals within this horror film that redefines the genre with manic and unpredictable behavior, transforming any romantic elements into something darkly humorous, unsettling, and occasionally quite graphic. The ending really resonated with me, and it's easily the strongest offering I’ve encountered in the horror space this year. A word to the wise: be cautious about what you wish for.
