The film gave me an uneasy feeling overall. The storyline about a woman obsessed with her boy friend while other men were interested in her felt familiar. However, Jolson’s performance as Al Wonder, the nightclub owner who hides the murder of Inez's partner and seems unaffected by the death of his driver in a car crash, presents him as someone disturbed rather than kindhearted. Contemporary audiences may be bothered by the final scene, which features Jolson along with backup singers and dancers in blackface. It’s clear that this sequence is intended to highlight Al Jolson, but it feels forced and out of sync with the rest of the film, pulling attention away from what's happening. Ultimately, Dick Powell’s character gains Inez's affection, which means Wonder must accept that he assisted a murderer in escaping and gained nothing from it. His final words, "There's nothing more for me to do but go home," suggest a lack of feeling or moral sense.
