Following the death of his wartime companion "Chris," Stewart Granger portrays "Adam," an unconventional gambler who takes in his orphaned daughter, "Evelyn" (Jean Simmons). At first, he misleads her into believing he is her father, but this pretense is quickly revealed, forcing them to navigate a more truthful relationship—or as close to honesty as he can manage—as their connection develops, much to the displeasure of the shrewd “Moira” (Helen Cherry). The two leads deliver strong performances, and the straightforward narrative unfolds as a thoughtfully crafted story centered on dishonesty, trickery, and an uncomplicated romance. Wilfred Hyde-White contributes some welcome warmth with his distinctive voice, as well. Ultimately, the resolution hinges on something as trivial as a moustache!
