People familiar with D-Day will already be aware of what happens in this fairly tightly constructed story, but that doesn’t really diminish the drama surrounding the decision of whether or not the landings should proceed on the day chosen by Eisenhower (Brendan Fraser) and Montgomery (Damian Lewis). The central issue revolves around getting an accurate weather forecast, which leads to the recruitment of chief meteorologist James Stagg (Andrew Scott), suggested by Churchill. When he arrives at headquarters, he finds that Col. Krick’s (Chris Messina) operation is too dependent on past data and his own experience predicting conditions in the more predictable environment of North Africa. This immediately creates friction between them, particularly when their forecasts don't match up; it puts the generals at odds with each other and raises tensions all around. To complicate matters further, Stagg learns that his pregnant wife might have been hurt during a bombing near the hospital where she was giving birth. Amidst all this conflict, can he maintain his focus, and will his forecasts be correct? I felt Andrew Scott gave a believable portrayal of someone who strongly believed in their own judgment but also possessed compassion. Fraser brought an unexpected sense of seriousness to his depiction of Eisenhower, while Kerry Condon's role as the general’s aide proved helpful—acting as a buffer between the often confrontational scientist and his rigid superiors. Speaking of those superiors, I had some difficulty with Damian Lewis’s portrayal of Montgomery; it seems cinema consistently depicts him as an overbearing figure, and this film doesn’t deviate much from that stereotype. Ultimately, this well-made movie highlights how collaborative the planning for the 1945 invasion was and just how risky the entire operation was, with only a few hours remaining and the enemy reinforcing their defenses.
