"Michael Martin" (Rock Hudson) portrays a quiet highwayman in 1800s Ireland who steals from wealthy landowners and supports Denis O’Shea’s organization working toward Irish independence through peaceful means. However, the latter is uncomfortable with accepting ill-gotten gains, so "Martin" departs abruptly and runs into a clergyman who brings him to a tavern. There's no vacancy at the inn, but the preacher proves inventive and they end up sharing a room—provided the robber can persuade the landlord, who despises rebels, that he’s respectable! As it turns out, appearances are deceiving; in a manner reminiscent of "The Moonraker," the priest is revealed to be the infamous "Capt. Thunderbolt" (Jeff Morrow), and the two quickly become close friends. The former develops an intense affection for the playful "Aga" (Barbara Rush), and what follows is a fairly typical adventure filled with swordplay. Hudson certainly looks the role, but his acting remains consistently bland, occasionally punctuated by a spark of something more. There’s very little connection between him and Rush, who seems equally unenthusiastic, and Finlay Currie's performance as the local bard doesn't quite ring true either. Despite this, it’s a vibrant film that moves along at a decent speed, with sufficient action, deception, betrayal, and menace to balance out the romantic elements. It may not be something I recall later on, but I did find myself enjoying it.
