The concept may have seemed promising on paper, but even with Adolphe Menjou's energy and Sonja Henie’s impressive ice skating sequences—she was a Norwegian champion—the movie has difficulty finding momentum, feeling considerably longer than its hour-and-a-half runtime. The plot centers around a financially struggling theater manager who finds an exceptionally gifted ice skater nicknamed “Greta” (Henie) while she's training for the Winter Olympics representing Switzerland, after his own hotel mysteriously burns down. He soon discovers multiple approaches to achieving his goals and proposes a role for her father (Jean Hersholt), who owns a guesthouse, within his vaudeville show, intending to secure management of the daughter as well. Simultaneously, the fire has drawn in two reporters looking to connect it with some shady dealings. “Bob” (Don Ameche) and “Danny” (Ned Sparks) are not only interested in the aftermath of the blaze but also in the secretive Montagu Love. While Henie appears to be developing her acting abilities, the other performers somewhat make up for her lack of experience on camera. However, the musical performances feel overly choreographed, and it's hard not to wonder if “The Ritz Brothers” were intentionally included as part of the destroyed hotel’s cast. The narrative could have been effectively conveyed in just thirty minutes, allowing room for an engaging conclusion that would highlight the established talent of this already two-time Olympic medalist. Apart from that, it largely comes across as a rambling and unfocused story.
