It’s not something likely to stick around in my mind for very long. *Lafayette Escadrille* manages to be passably entertaining, yet I struggle to remember much about what happened during its roughly ninety-minute running time. The narrative had promise but wasn't presented in a particularly engaging way, and the performances are unremarkable; they aren’t bad, exactly, just very ordinary, if you will pardon the expression, as no one makes a strong impression. Clint Eastwood has an early credited role here, although it feels like he might have been better off uncredited to be honest—you notice him more than you hear him, even though director William A. Wellman apparently wanted him and Paul Newman in the starring roles; studio head Jack L. Warner declined that idea and opted for Tab Hunter and David Janssen instead, relegating Eastwood to a smaller part. Hunter takes the lead, but my only takeaway from his performance is that he bears a resemblance to MMA fighter Ian Garry... am I alone in seeing that? Probably. The aerial action near the film's conclusion might make it worthwhile for some viewers, but otherwise, this 1958 movie isn’t something I would suggest watching.
