Jade Claw feels very much like a copy of Jackie Chan's Snake in the Eagle’s Shadow, but I think Jade Claw is actually the better film by a significant margin. The story begins as expected. A young man sees his father killed by a villain who specializes in the double phoenix eye fist – he considers this character to be the third-best villain ever. All that remains for the boy is a jade token to remember his father. There's some good comedy throughout the film, but not too much; just the right amount. The boy pretends to be a kung fu master to get hired at a school. He’s quickly exposed as a fraud, but asks if he can still work there. They let him in, and he begins learning kung fu from less-than-skilled instructors while also being teased and mistreated. He becomes friends with an elderly cook at the school who is secretly connected to the man responsible for his father’s death and is himself a martial arts expert. They share some amusing moments of trickery that should elicit laughter. After enduring constant beatings from mediocre fighters, the young boy decides to leave. The old cook feels empathy for the boy and demonstrates his own kung fu abilities. Following some playful maneuvers and pleading, the older man agrees to teach the kid a few basic techniques. The boy then puts those skills to the test. The double phoenix eye master has dispatched two formidable opponents—one blind and one deadly—to search every school in an attempt to find anyone practicing eagle claw style, which is the cook’s specialty. While showing off his new abilities, the double phoenix eye master notices that the boy knows some eagle claw. The kid attempts to fight back but proves no match for the master. He's subjected to torture as the henchmen try to force him to reveal who his teacher is, but he refuses to talk. They leave him alive so they can track down his mentor. Upon returning to the old man in a severely injured state, the young boy gives him the jade that his father had given him. The cook then realizes that this boy is the son of an old student who was killed years ago. He decides to train the kid in eagle claw style so he can avenge his father’s death. Eventually, the boy also learns a special technique from the older man. The boy faces off against the blind and deadly master as well as the double phoenix eye fist villain. He also gets some payback on those who bullied him at the school. It's a classic film that I am surprised hasn’t received more attention. Purchase this movie and add it to your collection; it’s an excellent kung fu film you can enjoy repeatedly.
