A group of young adults headed to a secluded lake in upstate New York encounter an unsettling stranger and find themselves needing to spend the night at a neglected, isolated mansion. The question is whether they’ll survive the experience. "Deadly Manor” (1990) blends elements of 80s slasher films with the atmosphere of movies like "Hell Night" (1981). Released a decade after the original “Friday the 13th,” it's comparatively late to the genre, but those who enjoy films such as "Tourist Trap" (1979), "The Funhouse" (1981), "The Prowler" (1981), "Frightmare" (1983), "Zombie High" (1987) and "Prom Night IV: Deliver Us from Evil" (1991) might still find something to appreciate, even if it’s among the weaker entries in that category. Similar to "Slugs" (1988), this is a Spanish production filmed in the United States. Some reviewers have noted a slow pace, but I found the film built up a good sense of suspense and mystery regarding what was happening at the old mansion. Clark Tufts delivers an especially memorable performance as Jack, with a rock star-like presence. The female cast includes Claudia Franjul (Helen), Liz Hitchler (Susan) and Kathleen Patane (Anne), but Jennifer DeLora is particularly noteworthy when she appears roughly halfway through. She’s also featured nude in one scene, along with some photographs. There's additional nudity involving a group of motorcycle riders, primarily shown through older pictures. Just so you know. The movie has a running time of 1 hour and 26 minutes and was filmed at Hillburn Manor, a crumbling 100-year-old mansion in Suffern, New York, which was torn down after filming wrapped up over five weeks around September 1989. Suffern is located approximately 40 minutes north of Manhattan, close to the border with northeastern New Jersey. GRADE: B-
