Amidst a widespread European conflict, a Guernsey fisherman named "Gilliatt" (played by Rock Hudson) finds himself involved in minor smuggling operations with his friend "Willie" (Bryan Forbes), consistently evading authorities. His life takes an unexpected turn when he meets the mysterious "Droucette" (Yvonne De Carlo), who is revealed to be on a clandestine assignment from "Lethierry" (Denis O'Dea). Her mission involves returning to France to gather intelligence regarding Napoleon’s (Gérard Oury) strategies for further European dominance. “Gilliatt” initially suspects she’s working with the enemy, despite his attraction to her, and is wary of her political leanings. However, he later learns that his assumptions were incorrect and that she faces significant danger. Simultaneously, he must be cautious of "Rantaine" (Maxwell Reed), a deceitful character who also engages in illegal trade and demonstrates unwavering loyalty only to those paying him. As for whether she can return home safely, the acting feels somewhat stiff throughout; there’s little spark between Hudson and De Carlo. While the story's espionage aspects do create a degree of suspense, the narrative ultimately unfolds in a predictable manner.
