It's a genuinely enjoyable adventure film featuring Ronald Colman ("Villon") and Basil Rathbone (Louis XI), both delivering strong performances. Colman portrays a character akin to Robin Hood—a poetic wanderer who takes what he can to aid the starving people of Paris, while their King indulges in luxury within his palace walls. After the King’s personal supplies are stolen, his guards intensify their searches and soon capture “Villon.” However, recognizing the man's potential, the King, a clever and experienced ruler, puts him in charge of the city and its military forces. This leads to a shift in public opinion regarding Louis XI, as everyone turns their attention toward impending attacks from Burgundy. Colman’s performance brought Errol Flynn to mind; he establishes a captivating connection with both his fellow actors and the viewers. Rathbone also excels as the astute king struggling to maintain control of his realm despite noticeable imperfections. Frank Lloyd maintains a brisk pace throughout, providing plenty of action sequences, sharp lines, and instances of deception. Fans of this type of film should find it appealing—I certainly did.
