Colin Petersen plays “Smiley,” a young man living with his mother while his father is away working cattle. He’s an energetic kid known for his kindness—though that doesn't stop people from taking advantage of him. The vicar, "Lambeth" (Sir Ralph Richardson), is the one who calls this situation to mind and provides a sixpence to kick off Smiley's attempt to collect a substantial £4 so he can buy a bicycle. That’s essentially what the film involves: figuring out how he will manage to earn enough money for transportation. Throughout, he's continually surprised by the generosity of those around him as they offer him various tasks—even singing in a pub—to help him reach his goal. Simultaneously, local police sergeant "Flaxman," also contributing to Smiley’s efforts, is investigating possible opium smuggling into the nearby Aboriginal camp and suspects landlord “Rankin” (John McCallum), particularly when Rankin starts paying the boy significantly more than usual to deliver packages across the river. The situation escalates into something quite humorous with his father's return and the police focusing their attention on the criminal activity. It might feel a bit drawn out, but Petersen delivers an appealing performance alongside Bruce Archer as Smiley’s friend “Joey.” Certain phrases may not age well after seventy years, but at its heart it is a story about youthful antics and resilience from a boy who brightens the lives of those around him—particularly their memorable clergyman.
