Brent Marchant on 23 Hours

6/10 · Apr 14, 2025

Films exploring alternate realities have become more frequent lately, with examples like "Everything Everywhere All at Once" (2022) and "Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness" (2022). Now, writer-director Bruno Irizarry has brought us a sci-fi comedy from Puerto Rico. The story centers on Manolo (Roy Sánchez-Vahamondes), a road construction worker who discovers a piece of an ancient Taíno medallion with magical powers in a remote area of the island—a place containing a mystical portal to another reality. This discovery sends him to a different version of his world, quite unlike what he’s used to. He finds assistance when Lorena (Jeirmarie Osorio), a new agent responsible for fixing inconsistencies across various realities, comes into the picture. Their mission: return Manolo to his original life within 23 hours. Despite being completely out of place, Manolo's extensive knowledge of science fiction proves surprisingly helpful in navigating this situation. Through this experience, he gains insights into himself and existence itself, even envisioning an ideal version of Puerto Rico. While the film tells a generally entertaining story, its quality isn’t consistent. Certain aspects, like the quirky humor, are effective, but occasionally it veers into excessive slapstick that diminishes the cleverness driving much of the plot. Some parts of the narrative feel unnecessary, while others lack explanation entirely, which detracts from the film's ability to convey meaningful ideas about the multiverse. Ultimately, this is a worthwhile effort that could have benefited from further script revisions and editing adjustments. Nevertheless, fans of science fiction will likely enjoy the many references to films and TV shows like "The Matrix," “Star Trek,” “Back to the Future,” and those previously mentioned, along with its creative special effects. It’s worth watching despite its flaws.
