It's true that polar bears generally like being alone, but this beautifully made animated film manages to be genuinely heartbreaking at times. We see a bear traveling across its frozen environment searching for someone else to be with. As winter approaches, most animals have already left – the geese are gone and even the orcas are hesitant to let it swim near their baby. Fortunately, it finds a snowdrift that looks like another bear, which gives it an idea. This idea is fluid and always shifting, allowing them to spend the winter together without its companion using up too much of the scarce food! However, when spring comes, something reminiscent of Raymond Briggs becomes unavoidable, and then – just as blossoms begin to appear in the meadow… It could be the music, or perhaps it’s simply how delicately this film pulls at your emotions, but there's a real sense of sadness about the bear’s isolation. There’s a message at the end highlighting how vulnerable these animals are because their habitat is shrinking due to global warming, but I also felt that it served as a reminder that people can experience loneliness and feel cut off from others too, and that while we might empathize with this bear, we should also think about our human neighbors. It’s moving, entertaining, sad, and simply superb, really.
