The movie assembled a respectable group of performers, but I felt it leaned too heavily into overly sentimental territory, which made for some slow moments. The narrative centers on a love triangle: "Kitty" (Merle Oberon) has been close to both "Alan" (Fredric March) and "Gerald" (Herbert Marshall), and the expectation is that she’ll choose between them. As World War I approaches, she selects "Alan," and their friend seemingly accepts her choice before they head off to war. However, things aren't as straightforward as they seem, because "Gerald" assigns his friend a dangerous task that has the potential to fundamentally alter their relationships. The plot is somewhat underdeveloped and fairly easy to anticipate, but Oberon gives a captivating performance as the perpetually dissatisfied "Kitty." Herbert Marshall consistently provides a dependable, though not particularly distinctive, portrayal, and he does so adequately here, especially as the film moves toward its conclusion. March appears less often, yet his presence contributes to an effective sense of tension when all three characters find themselves in delicate situations. Alfred Newman’s score is pleasant and unobtrusive, and the movie possesses a certain gentle, nostalgic quality that makes it worthwhile to view, even if it isn't exceptional.
