This unusual movie from the mid-80s has some creative ideas and is enjoyable for a while, but it falters significantly later on. The story centers around three college students in central Florida who are brought into an experiment run by the assistant of a brilliant computer scientist. This assistant is a woman with questionable ethics (Debbie Laster), and she’s connected to a courier played by Dale Midkiff, who turns out to be quite unstable. Meanwhile, the computer scientist's daughter (Debra Hunter) develops feelings for the courier, while some men hanging around a local bar are drawn in by the presence of these appealing young women. Things quickly spiral out of control. "Nightmare Weekend," filmed in Florida by a French production team in 1986, isn’t exactly a masterpiece of cinema, but it provides entertainment with its inventive touches, attractive cast and some amusing moments. One of those interesting elements is an Artificial Intelligence puppet called George, who serves as Jessica's companion and advisor at home. Debra Hunter (as Jessica), Lori Lewis (as Annie) and Kimberley Stahl (as Pamela) are standouts among the female performers. Andrea Thompson, who would later appear in NYPD Blue, also has a role as Linda, with Kim Dossin playing Mary-Rose. The movie becomes slow and boring after a while because it gets bogged down by unnecessary softcore scenes and ultimately fails to fulfill its initial promise. There are other problems too; the dialogue is dubbed, so the actors’ voices don't always match their lip movements, and some of the filmmaking choices just don’t make much sense. It’s not a well-made film in terms of technical quality, but it can be fun for those who appreciate low-budget oddities and the style of the mid-1980s—provided you're okay with some nudity. The movie has a running time of 1 hour and 25 minutes and was filmed in Ocala, Florida. GRADE: C
