It’s hard to imagine this movie being much better, aside from perhaps a version starring Simon MacCorkindale that somehow manages to be worthwhile—which hasn't happened yet, and isn’t the case here. The story begins with a drowning off the coast of Caboblanco, Peru, which officials claim was an accident. However, Giff Hoyt (Charles Bronson) has his suspicions, and those suspicions are amplified by the arrival of Marie (Dominique Sanda), who quickly runs into trouble with local authorities seemingly under the thumb of German businessman Gunther Beckdorff (Jason Robards). It becomes clear that something is going on—namely, rumors of gold located in a shipwreck nearby. People will inevitably draw parallels to "Casablanca," but those comparisons don’t hold up for long; this film doesn't come close to reaching that level of quality. The script feels overloaded with conversations, lacks any real finesse as the plot unfolds, and offers very little in terms of action—it seems Bronson was primarily concerned with getting paid. Even the final scene is loud and flashy, contributing to an overall experience that fails to capture the audience's attention. It’s a forgettable film, which is fortunate because it doesn’t stick with you for long.
