This crime noir proves more engaging than most, presenting Jack Hawkins as an insurance investigator brought in on Christmas Eve to look into a house fire. Upon arrival, he finds himself confronted by an old acquaintance (Irene Dahl), now married to the homeowner (Dennis Price). Following his death in a subsequent blaze, Hawkins initially believes she orchestrated the events for financial gain, but she manages to dissuade him, and they end up marrying, creating a seemingly uncomplicated situation. However, the appearance of a blackmailer complicates matters, forcing them to uncover the truth behind everything. Hawkins delivers a solid performance, maintaining a sense of suspense throughout. While the storyline falters occasionally, a strong supporting ensemble, including Ian Hunter and Geoffrey Keen, contributes to an absorbing mystery filled with misleading clues that hold the audience’s attention.
