Mann Robinson’s 2023 film *Sabastian* delivers a suspenseful blend of horror and crime thriller elements. The story centers on Irene (played by Jamie Bernadette), a journalist escaping an abusive relationship who then becomes targeted by a serial killer, Sabastian, portrayed by Luca Della Valle. Through a narrative structure that moves between the present day and flashbacks, the film explores Irene’s past experiences with her former boyfriend and how those events impact her capacity to form trusting relationships—particularly when confronted with someone as outwardly appealing yet intensely fixated as Sabastian. Both Bernadette and Della Valle are excellent in their roles as victim and aggressor, establishing a disturbing and uneasy connection that maintains audience engagement. Torrie Hart and Darius McCrary provide believable performances as the detectives attempting to apprehend Sabastian before he commits further acts of violence, with Clifton Powell contributing moments of levity in his role as their superior. The film’s visual style is dark and realistic, fitting the tone and environment, complemented by a score that evokes an unsettling atmosphere. *Sabastian* should appeal to those who enjoy horror and crime thrillers; it presents a distinctive perspective on familiar themes.
