Luftwaffe planes stationed on Rhodes are persistently attacking British forces in the Mediterranean, creating a situation where Dirk Bogarde ("Lt. Graham") must command a small group of British and Greek soldiers. Their mission involves penetrating the defenses of two airfields to destroy them and their aircraft, afterward returning to the submarine captained by Eric Pohlmann's cheerful "Capt. Papadapoulos." While there are moments of genuine excitement, mostly this is a slow-developing adventure that spends too much time on character quirks instead of telling a straightforward story. Though featuring actors like Denholm Elliott, Sam Kidd, and Akim Tamiroff, they don’t do enough to overcome the excessive dialogue throughout, and the ending felt confusing—or maybe I simply missed something. Cutting approximately twenty minutes from the beginning and emphasizing the military and raid elements would likely enhance the film considerably. As it stands, Bogarde does manage to keep things progressing, but only barely.
