Orson Welles provides the narration, detailing some of history’s most disturbing scenes. The presentation begins with an overview of the frequently mandated, temporary nature of Jewish communities in Europe, then moves to twentieth-century Germany, a nation struggling with widespread unemployment, an economy still recovering from World War I, and pervasive homelessness. The film adeptly portrays this national crisis as Adolf Hitler emerges with a straightforward explanation: blame lies with the Jews. Drawing on Nero’s understanding that providing people with someone to despise is a reliable method for solidifying political control and distracting from fundamental problems, a period of persecution starts. It initially involves registration, then confiscation of property, and subsequently, as the Nazi regime gains strength and pursues expansion across Europe, the events of the Holocaust are shown. The production utilizes a mix of historical film and animated sequences to tell the story, and Elizabeth Taylor lends a deeply emotional quality while reading excerpts from diaries left by individuals facing inevitable death at the hands of uniformed or lab-coated perpetrators. Those familiar with this kind of documentary may have seen much of the archival material previously, but it remains upsetting as the level of inhumanity is difficult to comprehend; the accumulating bodies and aerial views of the concentration camps are consistently impactful.
