It's clear those involved in making this movie were raised on films themselves. References pop up from “Return of the Jedi” through “The Hunt for Red October,” with nods to "Terminator" and even that not-so-great “Amazing Captain Nemo” from 1978. The story centers around a US Navy submarine, disregarding warnings, that ventures into the Bermuda Triangle and gets sent one hundred years forward in time—a future dominated by a military leader and his stormtrooper forces. This ruler is developing an ultimate weapon: an android created to resemble the submarine’s captain, who, incidentally, has been taken prisoner along with the rest of the crew. Naturally, the imprisoned sailors resolve to stop this villainous scheme, but they're severely outmatched by a society far more advanced technologically. So, what’s the verdict? It’s rather remarkable that Levy and Reed managed to extend such a flimsy narrative to ninety minutes, although the robot effects are genuinely good and represent the high point of the film. Does anyone else recall mixing “Cremola Foam” powder with water? The acting and writing don't really warrant discussion beyond their mere presence; there’s an entirely superfluous sex scene included, and ultimately, this is no better than a cheaply produced movie intended to fill airtime on the sci-fi channel late at night. It's best to pass on it, I'm afraid.
