Dylan Blore delivers a solid performance in this peculiar story about a boy identified early on with “acute misfortune syndrome,” which essentially dictates that things will inevitably go wrong for him or those he’s close to. The name given to him is remarkably fitting. His parents have difficulty coping, and his father (played by Mark Bonnar) leaves unexpectedly; he later returns attempting to repair the damage caused by his absence, inadvertently discovering a potentially profitable application for accident-prone "James." The film occasionally veers into slapstick territory, leans somewhat on Scottish stereotypes, and is generally forgettable, yet it manages to elicit some amusement.
