Robert Taylor portrays the central figure, a young man coming from America to study at Oxford. This self-reliant, energetic, and ambitious individual—identified as "Sheridan"—doesn’t easily adapt to the established customs of the university, quickly finding himself in opposition to the influential rowing captain "Beaumont" (Griffith Jones), which seems to encompass much of the student body. His situation doesn't get better when he starts a relationship with Beaumont’s sister, "Molly" (Maureen O'Sullivan). The story then unfolds through several moderately entertaining situations that highlight the differences between cultures and personalities; while agreeable enough to watch, they mostly just solidify some predictable ideas about everyone involved—none of which are particularly flattering. Regrettably, Taylor doesn't seem to connect well with either Vivien Leigh, whose presence feels inconsequential, or O’Sullivan, leading to moments where the story drags. There are a few memorable performances from CV France as the "Dean," Edmund Gwenn, Edward Rigby in the role of his Dickensian-named, wise steward "Scatters," and Lionel Barrymore as his father. The film concludes with some well-executed rowing sequences that brought back why I used to watch the annual Varsity Boat Race—I always hoped one boat would capsize. It's a gently amusing and enjoyable experience—an interesting look at two countries sharing the same language.
