I really like movies like this—a straightforward historical drama taking place in 11th Century England. However, the film feels too fragmented and disconnected for the narrative to ever truly gain momentum. It attempts to tell the story of the woman featured (Maureen O’Hara), who famously rode unclothed through Coventry (with a cascade of hair resembling Rapunzel covering her head, something not seen elsewhere in the movie!) to get her Norman husband "Leofric" (George Nader) to notice the suffering of ordinary people as tensions rise between the Norman and Saxon populations in this now-separated country. Leofric had already angered King Edward I (Eduard Franz) by rejecting his preferred marriage partner, so they soon realize their supporters at court are limited, and with encouragement from the deceptive "Godwin" (Torin Thatcher), things quickly escalate toward rebellion. Despite being based on actual events, this film takes considerable liberties with both historical accuracy and character development. Thatcher manages to convey a hint of threat, but most of the actors seem merely going through the motions in this vibrant, occasionally lively production—mostly thanks to Victor McLaglen’s presence. It's hard to consider O’Hara as an actress with a wide range; she simply portrays her familiar strong-willed persona, and while she isn’t poor, it feels like the same character she’s played opposite many more well-known actors over time. People who appreciate movies featuring knights in armor will probably find something to enjoy, and I did too, but ultimately it's fairly forgettable entertainment.
