This marks my third viewing of a film by G.W. Pabst, following his remarkable silent works, 'Pandora's Box' and ‘Diary of a Lost Girl,’ both featuring Louise Brooks. This is the English adaptation of ‘L’Atlantide’, which itself was a sound remake of Jacques Feyder’s earlier silent picture, and it distinguished itself by being filmed largely on location in the Sahara Desert, an unusual practice for filmmaking at that time. Brigitte Helm, best recognized for her part in Fritz Lang's influential science fiction film 'Metropolis', delivers a striking performance as a villainous woman; she would have been excellent in a film noir had her career extended into the 1930s. The storyline is unremarkable and occasionally overly sentimental, and the supporting cast doesn’t particularly stand out, but Pabst's visual style and skill behind the camera are evident and elevate what could otherwise be a rather dull movie. It’s recommended for those who appreciate adventure films from that period.
