The promotional material suggests a lavish wedding, a sudden death, and a suspicious fire all contributing to an ideal murder mystery. I recently watched this film with my wife, and we had very similar impressions. My initial reaction was that it felt like a send-up of the genre; I was surprised to learn it wasn't intended as one. Usually, a movie establishes its central ideas and introduces characters early on. This film begins with people arriving at a vineyard, but there’s little explanation about who these individuals are or their connections to the bride and groom, or even the plot itself. At one point, we were fifteen minutes into the film without knowing which of the women was supposed to be the bride—a detail that might give something away. The performances feel like they're pulled from the most regrettable moments in daytime soap operas, as if echoing “the grains of sand thru an hourglass.” Ultimately, you’re left feeling confused and asking yourself "What just happened?" when a more pressing question is "Why did I subject myself to this?"
