It’s hard to believe how much the History Channel has declined; it seems like they were producing truly excellent programs at one point. These days, it's mostly filled with shows like Ancient Aliens and other speculative programming, along with reality TV, and the network’s evolution into H2 and then ID, featuring constant true crime coverage. History Vault is their latest attempt, but it feels rough around the edges, just repackaging existing content. It's marginally better than what’s currently on the History Channel... although I recently saw a documentary about the Dark Ages on History Vault that was well-made, and they presented Byzantium as being responsible for not letting Muslim forces invade, loot, and take Constantinople without resistance. It’s quite a shame to see it this way. But “The Fallen” isn't disappointing—it’s genuinely good, even epic in scope. It reaches the same level of quality as shows like Land of the Tsars and other exceptional documentaries that History used to air when they were at their best.
