Paul Muni’s performance is what makes this movie worthwhile; he portrays the unidentified young man who comes to a police station and admits to murder. Taking a name—"Dyke"—from a calendar, he undergoes trial, conviction, and sentencing to death. Following the publication of his photograph and sentence, a mother and daughter question whether he could be their missing relative and begin an investigation. The narrative is unusual; it doesn't offer much information until the final quarter-hour, which delivers a genuinely touching conclusion featuring Muni and Marguerite Churchill, who received an Oscar nomination. While its cinematic importance—being an early, skillfully crafted sound film—is something to value, as a story, it feels incomplete for a good portion of the running time, and the other actors don’t contribute much to the suspense.
