CinemaSerf on The Affairs of Cellini

I present my affection just as you request cake! The thought of a frigid woman makes me want to die!” That's one of numerous lines spoken by Florentine artist and ladies’ man Benvenuto Cellini (played by Fredric March) as he charms his way through the city, reminiscent of Casanova or Don Juan. However, unlike those characters, this fellow is also a skilled sculptor and has caught the eye of the Medici family. The Duke (Frank Morgan) seems to be under the influence of his Duchess (Constance Bennett), who’s trying to get him to commission Cellini's work, but she has plans that aren’t visible in his artwork. As these two engage in a game of wits, one of this artist's former companions (Fay Wray) is being pursued by a Duke who keeps his wife confined to her rooms each evening—supposedly to safeguard her reputation, though it seems more likely he wants an opportunity to stray. March does an adequate job, but the true praise should go to Bennett and Morgan, who together provide a sense of chilly indifference along with a somewhat surprising combination of helpless yet often quite wicked behavior. It’s a well-made film, full of meticulous detail; the script gives everyone a chance to shine, and there's even a hint of sword fighting amidst all the elaborate costumes. It isn’t perfect, but I appreciate this type of movie and found it fairly enjoyable.
