John Chard on Dangerous Mission

5/10 · Jul 30, 2014

Dangerous Mission, under the direction of Louis King and featuring a writing team including Charles Bennett, W.R. Burnett, James Edmiston, and Horace McCoy, brings together Victor Mature, Piper Laurie, Vincent Price, William Bendix, Betta St. John, and Dennis Weaver. With music by Roy Webb and cinematography by William E. Snyder, the film was produced by Irwin Allen and presented in Technicolor 3-D. The movie is a genuinely entertaining experience, a campy classic full of laughs and noticeable shortcuts. The story revolves around Louise Graham (Laurie), who seeks refuge in Glacier National Park after witnessing a mob killing. Matt Hallett (Mature) and Paul Adams (Price) appear, both displaying an intense interest in her whereabouts, each with their own agendas. While boasting a strong cast, stunning visuals, and some exciting action sequences that hint at Irwin Allen’s future cinematic direction, the narrative feels somewhat sluggish, with the actors seeming to go through the motions. King, Allen, and the numerous writers seem determined to insert an action sequence whenever possible, but these moments often feel like superficial distractions from any real storytelling value; some scenes contribute nothing at all. The film's technical aspects are questionable; the editing is poor, as is the rear projection work, along with the obviously artificial sets and the sight of dummy props being thrown around. However, there are amusing details to appreciate, such as bullet bras and square shoulder pads, and Mature has a chance to display heroic bravado while battling electricity – a truly delightful moment. It’s an enjoyable film for all the wrong reasons, but enjoyable nonetheless. The rating is 5/10.
