Manuel São Bento on In the Grey

7/10 · May 20, 2026

Going into a new film from Guy Ritchie (The Covenant), I usually expect a particular kind of cinematic excitement. It’s reassuring to see a filmmaker who really knows how to make the most of the screen, and here, the easygoing conversation between Henry Cavill (The Man from U.K.E.L.E.) and Jake Gyllenhaal (Nightcrawler) is genuinely fun to watch. Eiza González (Baby Driver) completely commands attention whenever she appears, giving substance to the quirky appeal of the main group. What really sets In the Grey apart from a lot of modern action movies packed with CGI is Ritchie’s dedication to realism. By using actual locations and physical sets, every aspect of the production—from detailed design and stylish costumes to lively editing—works together perfectly. The action sequences are exceptionally well-made, utilizing striking wide shots and careful composition that clearly show the movement, making each intense firefight and explosion feel very real. Still, reaching those thrilling moments involves struggling through a lot of explanation. Ritchie tries to make these planning sections easier to take by using quick visual cues, fun maps, and smart graphics, but it’s still a large amount of information to absorb, eventually forcing you to just relax and go with the flow. Because In the Grey is so focused on plot and action, the characters aren't very developed, all possessing the same manufactured sense of coolness. The story itself follows a standard pattern with fairly low stakes and an ending that feels rushed, marked by the pointless deaths of minor characters who seem to be there just to move the plot along. However, I don’t believe that this predictability means it's average. There’s considerable artistic merit in well-performed, beautifully photographed, and thoroughly captivating entertainment that is clear about what it intends to be and delivers it with such enthusiasm. Movies don't always have to try something completely new to be really enjoyable, and seeing a skilled professional deliver familiar elements with so much flair reminds us of the simple, pure pleasure of watching a film in theaters.
