The film does manage to reflect some of the adventurousness of those heading west, but it suffers from a structure that feels disjointed and occasionally becomes tedious. The story begins promisingly, introducing Ramsay (played by Joel McCrae), who is attempting to secure a deal transporting goods beyond the railway’s end into the expanding frontier. His efforts to successfully deliver oysters become the catalyst for meeting Justine (Frances Dee) and her mother (Mary Nash), quickly adding a romantic element as his business rapidly grows. Throughout, he faces challenges from rivals, the postal service, and Apache attacks; however, nothing quite prepares him for the disruption caused by the Civil War. By this point, his operation has extended to California, where goldmines are financing the Union army. This revelation doesn’t go unnoticed by the Confederacy, who see an opportunity to redirect these shipments, increasing the peril of their journeys and creating unease back home with a family harboring Confederate loyalties. The film functions adequately when it emphasizes action sequences. McCrae does a reasonable job keeping things moving as stagecoaches are pursued, set ablaze, and looted. Unfortunately, as civilization extends to the Pacific coast, these exciting moments lose some of their impact, being supplanted by something considerably less engaging.
