The case involves Col. Adams, portrayed by Robert Mitchum, being brought in to handle the court martial defense of an American officer charged with killing a British non-commissioned officer in India. The guilt regarding the act itself isn't questioned; it’s presented as undeniable and straightforward. However, Adams begins to suspect something is amiss when he encounters what appear to be unnecessary roadblocks during his work. A witness is unexpectedly moved, and those meant to assist him begin to hinder his progress. Doubts arise about his client's mental state after a particular exchange—could insanity serve as a possible defense? This development causes considerable unease among superiors who seem willing to compromise an individual for the sake of maintaining harmony between Britain and America. It’s notable that Maj. Kensington, played by Trevor Howard, a British doctor, appears to desire transparency during the trial – but will he be able to overcome significant opposition? The film has a compelling narrative and features Mitchum giving a commendable performance with capable writing. Several recognizable actors appear in smaller roles, and there's sufficient suspense to maintain engagement throughout the ninety-minute runtime, culminating in a rather energetic conclusion.
