Posy Sterling delivers a truly impactful performance that really gets to you in this film. She portrays “Molly,” who is raising two young children as a single parent. After being released, she finds herself without employment, funds, or a place to stay, which means social services won’t allow the kids to return home with her – despite everyone's desire for that outcome. Her actions don't help her case when she runs off with the children following a monitored visit, but perhaps reconnecting with an old friend, “Amina” (Idil Ahmed), might help calm her unpredictable behavior before authorities decide to permanently place the children elsewhere for their safety. While Sterling’s acting is undeniably strong, some of the surrounding elements feel somewhat forced in an attempt to heighten the drama. Notably, there are no male characters present at all. The film doesn't explain why Molly was incarcerated; it only mentions a past involving domestic abuse, which centers on someone we never see. Although the children give acceptable performances, neither they nor Ahmed seem particularly genuine during their appearances. It’s true that the movie attempts to depict council officials as genuinely striving to protect the children’s interests, so it isn't entirely negative toward struggling social services; however, I felt it focused too heavily on showcasing one very intense, albeit unstable, character rather than offering a deeper look at a truly difficult situation. It’s something you could watch, but be aware that there are several shortcomings.
