It would probably have been better called “The Sorceress” or “Demon of Vengeance.” Following a terrible act, a young woman attending college in Southern California (Elizabeth Kaitan) seeks guidance from an actual witch (Lois Masten Ewing), and the individuals responsible begin to die off. "Necromancer" (1988) seems to blend elements of “I Spit on your Grave” (1978), with a feel like "Christine" (1983), plus a supernatural bargain similar to what’s found in the later “Shock ‘Em Dead” (1991). The special effects are also very much a product of playful 1980s filmmaking. While it doesn't possess the dark intensity of “I Spit” and isn't as impactful as those other films, there are still some enjoyable parts to be had. The film attempts to present itself as a serious exploration of the initial crime, which it partially succeeds at, but this is immediately undermined by the exaggerated black magic that’s displayed from the beginning. The appearance of a killer double also brings to mind "From Within" (2008). A significant problem is that the title is inaccurate because no spirits are actually raised from beyond the grave. Elizabeth Kaitan is appealing in her role, and viewers may recognize her as Robin from “Friday the 13th Part VII: The New Blood,” which was released during the same year. Stan Hurwitz makes a strong impression as the primary villain, and John Tyler fits well into his part as the girl’s decent boyfriend, who is also a musician. The film has a running time of 1 hour, 28 minutes, and filming took place at Pepperdine University on Pacific Coast Highway in Malibu, California. GRADE: B-/C+
